Among other effects, the Pantheon has a "cognitive" impact on visitors. Most visitors in our research reported that the Pantheon made them think. Why does the Pantheon make us think? How important is architecture for thinking about life?

For our research, one visitor remarked that the Pantheon "was a place of warmth, a place that brought me peace, a sanctified space."

Cos'è un'esperienza "spirituale" o "religiosa" dell'architettura?
From our research, 21% of pilgrims and 8% of non-pilgrims described their experience of the Pantheon as spiritual or religious. This suggests that to the extent that people are having memorable encounters with the space, fewer than we might think are referring to that encounter as spiritual or religious. Are these percentages higher or lower than you would have guessed? What do you think makes built environments religious or spiritual?

From our research: one visitor commented about their most memorable experience: "Its historical majesty. I could sense how many people have been inside this structure over so many centuries."

According to our research, when visitors were asked to describe their most significant experience at the Pantheon without any other prompts, their relation to the oculus (the circular hole in the dome) was mentioned more than a connection to any other feature or quality. Does this surprise you?

Over 1500 visitors completed our Pantheon visitor survey in 2022, sponsored by the Templeton Religion Trust and Fordham University. For the optional write-in parts of the survey, we received over 6000 comments. We will be sharing some of those comments as time goes on, hopefully encouraging continued savoring of and reflection on how the built environment can edify us and be part of our reckoning with life.
Here is one comment:
"The immensity of the building made me feel tiny, but also really powerful. The audio-video guides are really useful and informative, though it strikes me as strange that no video talks about the three tombs of Italian royalty. I loved the architecture of the whole building and the genius little holes in the pavement to drain rainwater. The light in this place is impressive too, because of the nine-meters wide hole in the dome that creates a perfectly circular spotlight.
Overall, I was not at all disappointed. It was a beautiful experience. If I ever see Rome again I'm going to visit the Pantheon again."

Last summer, we conducted a survey of Pantheon visitors underwritten by the Templeton Religion Trust and Fordham University. Over 1500 people responded to questions about their experience in the Pantheon, whether "religious," "spiritual," or "secular." We learned a lot about your experience (and about the Pantheon), and we will begin sharing that information soon.

Beginning Monday, it will cost 5 euros to go into the Pantheon. While it seems likely there will be far fewer visitors, the money will help to maintain the monument and support Catholic ministry there. With this significant change, it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming months and years in terms of official curation and visitor apprehension of the space. Entering for religious services, such as Catholic Mass, will remain free of charge.
